Organic Halloween Costume

It is almost time for Halloween and I am so excited! We love this time of year….the weather finally starts to get cooler so we can go outside much more. There are also a ton of pumpkin patches to go to and Halloween Parties to attend. Last year, Baby Roku was sick during the whole week prior to Halloween and was still under the weather on the actual day. So we are even MORE excited to really celebrate this year! As far as a costume, I was thinking he would be a Vol Football player, however I got inspired to try something different when I was at a birthday party this past weekend. I am very careful about what I apply to Baby Roku’s skin, so any type of face paint MUST be safe and natural. At the party, Baby Roku ate 4 wedges of watermelon which began to stain his face red. He also had white around his eyes from the California Baby Sunscreen Stick that we had applied to him earlier in the day. I had to take a picture and noticed he kinda looked like a CLOWN! Hence the inspiration to try a home-made, food-based face paint. The recipe for red face paint made from organic beets is below.

Baby Roku with Watermelon Stained Face

Here is the recipe:

Juice 1/4 beet
Shea butter
Cocoa Butter
Mix

You might need to melt the shea and cocoa butter over low heat before mixing in the beet juice if it is too solid. Slowly drop the beet juice into the butter mixture until you have the desired shade of red. Pictures of the actual costume to follow!!!

Hemp Seed Bars

This recipe was inspired by a friend whose daughter can’t eat nuts. She, however, loves raw foods and sweets! It is a great snack for those with nut allergies and is also packed with omegas, folate, magnesium and Iron! Baby Roku cannot get enough of them (although that does not surprise me since he will eat just about ANYTHING!). It is one of his favorite travel snacks. This recipe is so easy, so give it a try!!

1 cup Hemp Seeds (raw)
1 cup Sunflower Seeds (raw, soaked, preferably sprouted)
Small Handful Pumpkin Seeds (raw)
10 dried apricots
6 Dates
Splash Lemon Juice
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Blend seeds in food processor, then add fruit, spices and lemon juice. Spread into 8×8 pan and refrigerate for 2 hours. Slice into bars. YUMMY!!

Brainy Ball Snack

Looking to incorporate more Omega’s into you and your child’s diet? Give this recipe a try! It contains walnuts and flax, both considered to be “brain food” because of their high concentration of omega-3 fats. Your brain is more than 60% structural fat. For your child’s (and your) brain cells to function properly, this structural fat needs to be primarily the omega-3 fats found in walnuts and flax seed. This is because the membranes of all our cells, including our brain cells or neurons, are primarily composed of fats. Cell membranes are the gatekeepers of the cell. Anything that wants to get into or out of a cell must pass through the cell’s outer membrane. And omega-3 fats, which are especially fluid and flexible, make this process a whole lot easier, thus maximizing the cell’s ability to usher in nutrients while eliminating wastes–definitely a good idea, especially when the cell in question is in your brain.

I whipped the recipe below morning and Roku loves it! The only down side that it is a little greasy and crumbles, so I just pop the balls into his mouth by hand. Let me know what you think!

Brainy Ball Snack

2 c. walnuts
1/4c. ground flax seed
5 dates, soaked and pitted

Grind/mix all ingredients in food processor. Add more dry ingredients if too wet to roll in balls. Roll into bite-sized balls and enjoy! I refrigerate them, but you can dehydrate them on a low setting if you like.

More Raw Food Treats

I had some leftover nuts and apricots so I threw together this ‘raw ball’ (or, as I call them below ‘raw nuggets’) snack recipe. Just shows how quick and easy these are to make! These measurements are approximates. I literally just used what I had left and it actually formed into a nice consistency for rolling into bite sized balls.

Raw Nuggets

1 cup almonds
7 dried apricots
3 TB shredded coconut
1 date
Blend all ingredients in Food Processor and roll into balls. Store in refrigerator.

Healthy Eats Playdate II – Recipes

Thanks to everyone for coming to the playdate yesterday! We had such a great time. Dylan was excited to hang out with some of his ‘older’ friends. I really appreciate everyone chipping in on the recipe ingredients. And those organic bananas were particularly tasty…Thanks Heather! ; ) A lot of the recipes that we made were repeats of the one in my previous post below, so I will just post the Blueberry Truffle Recipe (aka Raw Blue Balls with Nuts) here. Let me know if you have any questions and/or if you want me to provide you with a recipe that ‘sneaks in’ a particular vegetable. ENJOY!!

Blueberry Truffles

1 cup Walnuts
1/2 cup Sesame Seeds
1/2 cup Almonds
5 Dates (soaked for 15 min and pitted)
2 Tbs Raw Cacao Powder

Put into Food Processor
Roll into Balls
Dehydrate at 110 for 5 hours if desired

Recipes from Today’s Healthy Eats Playdate

Hi everyone! I hope you enjoy these recipes! Please let me know if you have any questions!!

Green Smoothie

2 Ripe Banana (Frozen or Fresh)
10 Leaves Organic Spinach
1 Cup Water
Sweetener (I used 1 date and 1 small scoop Stevia in class)
Ice if you want it colder (no more than 4 or 5 cubes)

Blend in Vitamix or regular blender
Your child may be more likely to drink it if it is in their favorite cup OR from your cup with a straw…Might want to try this first
Slowly increase the number of greens as your child develops a taste for it
Change up your greens by using Kale, Beet Tops, Celery, Romaine, etc.
You can also add different fruits! I like to put at least a little banana in so that it is creamy.

Blueberry Truffles

1 cup raw walnuts
¼ cup organic blueberries (fresh or frozen)
3 dates (soaked for 15 minutes and pits removed)
1 Tb raw cacao powder

Blend in Food Processor
Roll into balls and serve!
Add Ground Flax Seed for additional fiber and Omega 3’s!!

Apple Cookies

2 organic apples (cored and cut into 1 inch chunks)
1 1/2 cup raw almonds (or walnuts, brazil nuts, etc)
3 Dates (soaked for 15 min and pitted)
5 Apricots
¼ cup Ground Flax Seed

Grind almonds until powder in food processor
Add flax, dates and apricots and grind again
Add apples one at a time until the mixture is of a consistency with which you can roll into balls (too many apples will make the mixture too gooey)
Roll in balls; if desired bake in oven on 200 for about 20 minutes (this will make them less sticky) or in Dehydrator on 110 for 5 hours

Raw Ice Cream

3 Frozen Ripe Bananas
1 Date or another sweetner (optional, I did not add any in class)
That’s It!
Optional Ingredients:
Frozen Strawberries
Frozen Blueberries
ANY Frozen Fruit
1 Tb Raw Cacao Powder
AND during class I snuck a handful of spinach in there and it didn’t seem that the babies noticed!

Pina Colada Chai Green Smoothie

If you know me, then you know that the green smoothie is the holy grail of my raw food daily eating! But today, I thought I would mix up my green smoothie ingredients a bit. I had been feeling really dehydrated after my smoothies lately. This is a sign that I needed to switch up my greens because all greens have alkaloids that can be slightly toxic if you eat the same ones day-after-day. So, instead of the typical spinach, I used beet greens. I bought 6 beets for a recipe I am going to make this week so I used the green tops. Another unique ingredient I added this time was coconut meat. I was at my friend Rene’s house yesterday where her husband cracked open a coconut from their backyard to use the water. He let me take home the coconut meat so I decided to throw that in there too. I looked in the fridge and noticed my husband had cut up some pineapple last night. Hmmm…I am thinking pina colada! I added some spices to give it a chai flavor. And, wah-lah, the pina colada chai green smoothie was born!

Pina Colada Chai Green Smoothie
6 beet tops
Handful Pea Sprouts
2 Tbs Chia Seed Gel
2 Tbs Probiotic Powder
2 Frozen Bananas
5 Pineapple chunks
2 cups water
5 ice cubes
Meat from one coconut
Dash of the Following:
Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cardamon, Cloves, Ginger, Stevia
