Organic Halloween Costume

It is almost time for Halloween and I am so excited! We love this time of year….the weather finally starts to get cooler so we can go outside much more. There are also a ton of pumpkin patches to go to and Halloween Parties to attend. Last year, Baby Roku was sick during the whole week prior to Halloween and was still under the weather on the actual day. So we are even MORE excited to really celebrate this year! As far as a costume, I was thinking he would be a Vol Football player, however I got inspired to try something different when I was at a birthday party this past weekend. I am very careful about what I apply to Baby Roku’s skin, so any type of face paint MUST be safe and natural. At the party, Baby Roku ate 4 wedges of watermelon which began to stain his face red. He also had white around his eyes from the California Baby Sunscreen Stick that we had applied to him earlier in the day. I had to take a picture and noticed he kinda looked like a CLOWN! Hence the inspiration to try a home-made, food-based face paint. The recipe for red face paint made from organic beets is below.

Baby Roku with Watermelon Stained Face

Here is the recipe:

Juice 1/4 beet
Shea butter
Cocoa Butter
Mix

You might need to melt the shea and cocoa butter over low heat before mixing in the beet juice if it is too solid. Slowly drop the beet juice into the butter mixture until you have the desired shade of red. Pictures of the actual costume to follow!!!

Summer is Here! Time to stock up on SAFE Bug Spray!

Organic Bug Spray for Kids!

As part of my “Simply…” line of organic body care products, I offer an effective insect repellent that contains organic essential oils that deter pesky summer invaders such as mosquitoes, ‘noseeums’, wasps and bees. To be safe, test a small portion of their skin before applying to their entire body. This is to ensure they do not have an allergy to the essential oils that are used. Johnson & Johnshon Baby Shampoo Contains Formaldehyde! Everyone needs to know this…

When I left the hospital with my beautiful newborn baby son on February 18, 2009 the hospital so graciously gave me samples of products to take home with me. Do you think they realized that the bottle of Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo that they gave me contained dangerous chemicals??? Probably not, but they should! As of the date of this article, Johnson & Johnson still contains more than 2 ingredients that have proven to be very harmful, especially when applied to our babies’ delicate, thin skin! The ingredients are 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. So this makes you want to read the ingredients for skincare products that you use on your children…right?? Well, to make the situation worse, you won’t find these 2 ingredients on the list. That is because 1,4 dioxane is a biproduct that is produced when certain chemicals that actually are on the ingredient list (like sodium laureth sulfate) are made to be gentler (ironic…right???). So it is not on the ingredient list because it is a contaminant that is created in the process of making this popular baby shampoo. And what about formaldehyde? Sometimes it will be listed, but not always. Usually not on the list though because it is released from common preservatives. By the way, formaldehyde has been classified as a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, not to mention a skin irritant. (Please see http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/risk/formaldehyde)

Okay, so now you know this info. What do you do now? Well you have taken the most important first step which is educating yourself on what is best for your little one (and YOU)! As an owner of a skincare business, I have done quite a bit of research on this topic. I do not make shampoo, but after reviewing many products my favorite line is California Baby. They don’t contain the chemicals listed above, nor do they contain other harmful ingredients such as pthalates, parabens, and fragrance (yes, fragrance is not good!) If California Baby’s products are scented, they are with organic essential oils. There are actually a lot of great product lines out there, but don’t just assume by the name that they are the best. For example, Burt’s Bees is a ‘natural’ product line, but their baby shampoo, lotion, etc contain fragrance. Many studies have been done that show ‘fragrance’ as being toxic (http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ingredient.php?ingred06=702512).

Now if you are like me, you probably scoured your bathroom to find which products contain these chemicals. It is very likely that almost all of them do! But don’t freak out…even small, gradual changes can make a huge difference. It is also so important to have a healthy diet to keep your immune system strong so gradual changes in that department are very helpful too!

Fortunately, there are many articles such as this emerging on the dangers of the products we use on ourselves and our children. So much so that even Johnson & Johnson is launching a ‘green’ campaign with a website dedicated to their efforts (http://www.activenaturalsinstitute.com/anri/) and have even hired a famous ‘health-minded’ mom as their spokesperson. But have they removed the toxic chemicals in their products? NO! Not yet anyway…

Okay, I hope I have not overwhelmed you with TMI. There is so much to know and this is just the tip of the iceberg. I will continue to post important topics such as these to make your adventure in motherhood easier and stress-free! In the meantime, a great resource to determine which products are safe is http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.org.
